Even though it wasn’t as successful as the Chromecast or the Chromebook line, Google’s Chromebit is still a pretty impressive device that has a lot of potential. For those of you that don’t know much about the Chromebit, it is a dongle that runs Chrome OS and it basically transforms your TV into a desktop computer. All you have to do is plug the Chromebit in the HDMI port of your TV or monitor and the display turns into a personal computer. And you can get a Chromebit for a decent price.

Just how decent? According to the latest news, we may soon be able to buy a Chromebit for just $49. At least that is what Sunchip, a manufacturer from China proposes. The news comes from armdevice.net and at this point it is little more than a rumor. It seems that Sunchip can manufacture the Chromebit chips for half a hundred dollars, but the company seems to still be waiting for the OK from Google. The price tag of $49 seems to be for 1000 pieces directly from the factory, so the actual price may be higher. Then again, we won’t know until it is released.

It would also be very interesting to find out if the Rockchip RK3288 HDMI Stick will really run Chrome OS. The presentation on the Chinese company’s website suggests that the chip runs Android. We will find out the answer when Sunchip launches the $49 Chromebit. At the moment, it seems like the company is working with Google to bring the chip to the end user. If the Chromebit will eventually be released, and if the price tag remains at $49, it will be an incredible feat and even more tempting than ASUS’ Chromebit which is set to be released soon with a price tag of a hundred bucks.

Besides the low price tag, the Rockchip RK3288 HDMI Stick from Sunchip will also feature 2 GB of RAM (though it seems there may be a version with 4 GB of RAM for a higher price tag), support for 4K displays, a microSD card slot, micro USB power input and an external antenna for WiFi signal. The RK3288 chip is pretty powerful and it offers an overall good Chrome OS experience. Just keep in mind that this $49 Chromebit is not out yet and it may be a while before you can buy it, not to mention the price tag could actually change.
